What comes first oil or moisturiser?

Being a skincare formulator can be tough, from the very beginning of concept to final stages of the product. One of the very first questions I ask myself when formulating is where does this fit in into a skincare routine? There seems to be a lot of confusion and a lot of debating as to what goes first.

When I first was formulating the Night face oils, I had a hard time trying to figure out what comes first, do people use this before moisturiser or after?

The truth is, there is no right or wrong answer, it all depends on your skin type. Solo Skin London recommend using the night face oil after moisturiser. This is because we want to save the goodness to last of course!

The reason why we want to save the best to last is because of the properties in those beautiful blended oils. For example, Meadowfoam seed oil has fantastic properties that help with water loss, it helps seal in moisture and acts as a barrier.

My theory is that moisturising creams are a mix of water and oils. One of the reasons why oil should go on last is because lets face it, water evaporates. The oils when used last, will work as a barrier, we all know water and oil do not mix so therefore the oil literally sits on top of the cream, locking the moisture into the skin, giving the skin the benefits from the cream and the oil. Where as if an oil was used first and the cream last, the cream has water, water can evaporate which means a loss of water from the skin, making the skin dry...I hope that makes sense?!

I am no expert, but I think if you have dry skin, we recommend using Night oils as the last part of your routine!

At what stage do you use your oil? Comment below, it would be so good to hear other peoples views on how they use oils!
